Women Entrepreneurs ? Doing Business in a Feminine Way

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Supporting entrepreneurial women is my passion. With that in mind I wrote this article for female/women entrepreneurs only, so I could focus and celebrate the feminine way of doing business. I’m eager to share with you communities that support doing business in a feminine way.

This is an important subject since women are starting businesses at nearly 3 times the rate of men. Currently there are 11million women owned businesses in the US. What’s motivating women to start their own businesses? According to a survey by Ladies Who Launch, women launch a new business for the following reasons:

To have more FREEDOM and CONTROL over their schedules and LIVES. To pursue their PASSION and DREAMS. To create REVENUE and MAKE MONEY doing what they love.

The specific motives are unique to every woman yet they reflect a pattern. Women want their business to fit in with the rest of their priorities and values in life.

The Feminine Approach to Launching a Business

Women generally rely on a more intuitive approach to starting their businesses. In order to get started, women need to feel the creative juices flowing and then have the freedom to act on their ideas. Ladies Who Launch is the first online and in-person platform to recognize and cater their program (for female/women entrepreneurs only) to the uniquely feminine approach to launching.

The feminine approach is celebrated through the Ladies Who Launch Incubator program, where you can get through the first stage of launching and find the resources you need to continue growing. As an Incubator leader in my local area, I’ve watched that the participants’ businesses truly expand and grow more quickly when they are connected to other women in their area. Click here (insert link) to learn more about Incubator programs in your area.

The Feminine Approach to Running a Business

Women tend to be collaborators and prefer not to go it alone. This can be a tremendous advantage because they’re always on the lookout for help to get their business off the ground more quickly. Most women don’t have a problem admitting that they’re not sure how to proceed and will ask for direction. Their businesses benefit as a result.

At whatever stage their business is at, entrepreneurial women are always looking for:

Inspiration – Women are inspired when they see and learn from other women who have great ideas, a broader, more creative perspective and who are already achieving the kind of lifestyle they visualize for themselves. Learning from other successful entrepreneurs gives women a sense of who’s doing what in business and if she can do it, I can do it!

Resources - Women want training and coaching from business experts on the latest business strategies. They also want advice on how to create balance and a high-quality personal life.

Community – Women crave a like-minded community of women for a daily dose of wisdom, support and guidance.

Women need a venue to get the inspiration, resources and sense of community they crave. A few years ago I began hosting a monthly “Great Women’s Gathering” in my home. These few joyful hours of unstructured sharing are tremendously valuable for everyone in attendance. It gives us a chance to connect, gather together and learn from one another in a completely supportive environment. Consider starting your own group as a way to reach out to women in your community.

I launched Metromom.com and created The Metromom Entrepreneurs Association for female/women entrepreneurs only. This online community helps metromoms-entrepreneurial moms in home-based businesses-find all the business support and business supporters they need to be successful. I wholeheartedly believe there’s plenty of room for every woman to shine in all that she does-and this quality of abundance is a very important way to celebrate the feminine way of doing business.

Women Balancing Work and Life

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Today’s woman is not merely a housewife, she is now more independent and career oriented. For this she has to maintain the work/life balance, which is tough but not impossible.

For maintaining proper balance between her professional and personal life she needs proper planning and strategy. The ways by which she can execute your essential activities properly are-

List the appropriate methods that you must execute to stay fit and healthy, like exercise, sleep, meditation, prayer etc. Investigate the reason for which you are stuck in busyness and ask your friend to look out for what you have missed out.

Treat these functions equally as your work because in absence of them you will not be able to complete out your functions/duties properly. So, do not ever treat them as optional or extras.

Further consider those activities that boost your energy and as important as changing oil in your car. Honestly take proper intervals for executing these activities. Make a schedule for them in your calendar and stick to your commitments. For example- visit to the dentist or having a refreshing massage in massage parlor.

Think about the items that are as essential as cleaning of house like visit to parlor for pedicure, having a haircut and few hours in hot tub. They are refreshing activities that enable you to forget all your tensions.

But what are the strategies that you can adopt for maintaining the work/life balance.  The strategies that you can adopt even at home to fulfill your needs without affecting the work performance are-

The first formula for maintaining work/life balance is to avoid being panic. Firing your employee, replace the old system or getting divorce is easy is not an effective solutions at this time. Instead seek advice from an expert and act accordingly.
Meditation- meditation will connect you with your source and in turn eases your tension.

Self evaluation- Analyze your energy level and capabilities to perform well in every sphere of life. If you feel they are not up to mark then have professional evaluation and take actions accordingly for well being restoration.

Do not execute the functions as per others guidance and do not follow others’ lifestyle.

Have good people company- Enjoy company of those people who have good and healthy habits. It is because healthy lifestyle reflect positive attitude towards life.

Managing your thinking- when we mange the positive and constructive thinking every time, this will reflect on our mood and will motivate us for further creativity in the work area.

Fix healthy and flexible boundaries- life and business may be connected but do not sacrifice your privacy. Fix real and flexible boundaries for both of them.

Create or use refine systems for your work- Generate good system for managing real life and real business.

Make an aim and frame plan to achieve it.  Keep up-to-date your plan and make changes into commitments and offers to match present activity with available resources.

These points will work well to get your life and work aligns with each other.

Best Paying Careers For Women – In Fashion

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Having spent the last 9 years in seemingly the most glamorous and desirable industry to women, fashion I am often asked about the careers and opportunities for women in fashion and more often what are the best paying careers for women in fashion today?

The beauty about the fashion industry is that it caters for the creative and the business savvy as well as encompassing the back end blood sweat and tears in producing apparel for the Australian and global markets.

Let’s look at the best paying careers for women in fashion…

For the business savvy roles for example Brand Manager, Product Manager or Retail Buyer you need a qualification in business, commence, economics or marketing. Candidate perception is often misunderstood with these roles and in the past 4 years they have become the glamour roles of the industry. The misconception largely surrounds the intense business acumen required to be a success. You need to be numbers savvy, have strong skills in product forecasting, budgets, calculation of EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) and have strong analytical skills and margin and profit focus. All too often candidates see for 15% fascination with the product side of these roles and fail to see that 85% of the job is spent behind an excel spreadsheet.

Salaries in Australia for Brand Manager, Product Manager and Retail buyer vary greatly and are very dependent on the size of the company. With this said, some of the larger brands are the poorer payers. Brand Manager, Product Manager and Retail Buyers earn above national average to executive salaries at the top end. Longevity plays a big role in securing top dollar so proving yourself is essential. Your success will be measured on year in and year out results and growth so 18 months here and there is not going to get you into the best paying careers for women in fashion. You need to have some creative edge in these roles, so a sense of style and fashion is essential as much of the creative team is likely to report to you. These roles will see you provide product direction, range planning and product lifecycle analysis as a response to market forces and trends as well as the financial management aspects..

The creative roles in fashion are probably the most deceptive. Design is hard work and again longevity is going to go along way to allowing you to achieve your financial salary goals. My best advice when negotiating a role in design is to negotiate your increases when you commence. One of the biggest problems in increasing salaries once you start working is the lack of a remuneration plan at commencement.

To be a fashion designer you will need to have studied fashion design at any one of the various International Design schools. Getting accolades will also help. Make sure your design projects reflect commercial fashion and if they don’t leave them out of your portfolio. It is very off putting to an employer of a fashion designer to see arty unwearable fashion in the recruitment process.

As a fashion designer you will not only be responsible for the design of the ranges within the product budgets and brand values but you will be responsible for the outcome, market acceptance or rejection! It is very rare for a design graduate to score a top job as a fashion designer but occasionally it does happen. Your career path is however more likely to commence behind the scenes as a designers assistant. You will sketch, source fabrics, trims and accessories, cut samples, prepare range books and coordinate the design timeline with the pattern makers and sample machinists. Not too much creative here but at least you will be close to the action.

Prove yourself and you will be introduced to designing your own portion of a range with a bit of luck (and blood sweat and tears). As a designer assistant (graduate) in fashion expect to earn average national salaries. You will be competing with a big group of graduates all chasing the dream so embrace anything on offer and be realistic about the brand opportunities offered to you. It is no time to be a brand snob when you have just graduated from design school. If you decide to be brand specific be prepared to wait tables as it may be required for a while until the right break comes you way.

As a Range Designer of a visible and market identified brand expect to earn anywhere from average to executive salaries at the end. When so much hinges on the talents of a designer you would expect higher paying salaries, however, simple supply and demand principles unfortunately come into play. The best news is that when longevity kicks in (if you haven’t started your own label) the role of Design Director comes with a hefty pay packet. As Design Director of a fashion brand expect to earn serious executive dollars. Achieve this in fashion design and you have made it!

Let’s look at the engine room; Production Management, Operations and Supply Chain. These roles are the most critical to a fashion operation. Apparel may not be a perishable commodity but if it is late into store it may as well be. With the changes in supply chain and imports the production of apparel in the last 10 years has changed the nature of these roles significantly. In fashion production, operations and supply chain you can expect to frequently travel to operations particularly in the east and work in some quite deceptive conditions. Let me qualify this by saying that your negotiation skills need to be razor sharp and your ability to identify the right sources is essential.

In terms of qualifications you need a fashion production qualification, business or logistics supply chain management qualification or similar. Garment construction knowledge is essential. You will work hands on and be required to make the call on garment construction issues so it is imperative that you know the lingo. At the low end Production Managers in fashion earn just above national salaries with Operations and Supply Chain Managers earning exceptional executive dollars.

Whilst I have purposely focused on the highest paying roles for women within the fashion industry the obvious roles of General Manager, CEO and Company Director form the highest paying roles in the sector. It is difficult to focus on these roles when the opportunities are quite few are far between. Some outstanding women have achieved these roles in fashion with Sue Morphet of Pacific Brands crashing through the glass ceiling some years ago and moving up the scale with full force. Sue is of particular inspiration having conquered such an exceptional role within an established and traditional brand. There are other women like Sue earning exceptional salaries within the fashion sector, but the roles are few and far between. Salaries at this top end can reach beyond half a million dollars including bonuses and share options.

Secrets about Calcium Requirements. Calcium for Women 40 yrs Plus

Why calcium for women?

“Whether you get enough calcium and build adequate bone mass early in life or not, your body will start reabsorbing bone from your skeleton during your perimenopausal and postmenopausal years, which can lead to osteoporosis,” says Ethel Siris, MD, director of the Toni Stabile Center for Osteoporosis in New York City.

“If you enter menopause with a lower bone mass, obviously you’ll be at a disadvantage,” notes Dr Siris. The body uses the reabsorbed bone to keep your blood calcium at a healthy level to sustain life.

How much calcium do we need?

Throughout one’s entire life, this mineral is important, but over time, the body’s requirements for calcium change.

For those 50 years or younger, the daily calcium requirement through food or additional supplements is 1,000mg. Older than 50 years the requirement increases to 1,500mg per day.

1,500mg of calcium daily seems like a lot, however the abundance of natural foods containing this mineral is fabulous. Dairy products are high in calcium, followed by calcium fortified juices, breads and cereals.

By simply consuming three daily servings of low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese, or calcium fortified soy milk or orange juice will provide more than 1,000mg of calcium. Once adding the calcium contained in other foods such as legumes and salad greens, the daily requirement is easily met. However, if you do not have this quality of diet each and every day, a supplement of calcium would more than likely be needed.

Are calcium supplements required?

It is okay to take supplements. The majority of women 40 yrs plus do not get enough calcium in their everyday diet, as either they don’t enjoy the taste of dairy, or for many they find them difficult to digest, or another factor is the thought that they are fattening. Therefore, take supplements if your diet is not rich in calcium content foods.

The body does not fully absorb the full amount of calcium consumed. For example, a glass of milk contains about 300mg of calcium, and when added with a 600mg supplement, you would imagine that you have taken in 900mg of calcium. In fact, the body has absorbed less and will excrete the remainder.

Beware when taking the traditional calcium supplements as often they may be too much. The body is only able to absorb a certain amount of calcium at once, and the excess is excreted, therefore taking the mineral in several doses throughout the day will optimise absorption.

Chewable supplements are available such as Tums, an antacid which is calcium based. Another is Viactiv soft chews. These supplements could be chewed several times each day to supplement the calcium intake from the diet.

Look out for the robbers

Unfortunately there are certain things which will deplete the amount of calcium in the body. These are protein, salt and caffeine.

We need to protect the calcium that is absorbed, and to do this we should cut back on fast foods, processed foods, canned foods, packet chips, pickles and any products that are high in salt.

Reducing the amount of coffee per day to two cups is recommended, however if adding milk to the coffee, some of calcium is being replenished.

Tips to preserve calcium through lifestyle

The absorption of calcium is assisted with Vitamin D, therefore a little sunlight each day is recommended. This is because sunlight on the skin produces Vitamin D in the body, which in turn helps the calcium absorption process.

If you are unable to get a daily dose of sunlight (10 minutes is all that is needed) it may be wise to take a multivitamin containing Vitamin D, or a calcium supplement with Vitamin D. What do you do if you go out in the sun? Wear Sunscreen!

Crucial to maintaining healthy bones, is exercise. Resistance training or strength training, and weight bearing exercise is essential for maintaining bone mass and avoiding the onset of osteoporosis. Adding exercise which involves activities such as walking, running, gardening and strength training using weights for resistance are all important to strengthen the bones and maintain healthy bone mass.

Cigarette smoking is damaging to the bones as the habit lowers oestrogen levels which in turn speeds up the levels of bone loss. Smoking has also been found to reduce the amount of calcium which is absorbed into the body.

Alcohol intake is also known to reduce the ability of the bones to absorb calcium. Having more than two serves of alcohol will be detrimental to the calcium absorption process.

The majority of women 40 yrs plus can prevent osteoporosis by choosing a healthier lifestyle including a well balanced nutritional diet, partaking in both aerobic and strength training exercise, reducing the amount of alcohol consumed and avoiding cigarette smoking. Supplementation may still be required for certain vitamins and minerals to optimum health.

For Women Only: a Woman?s Guide to Success on Command

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

In 1982, I, too, was struggling with two jobs and a household to run; I was also a schoolteacher. My idea of extravagance was going on one “nice” hotel vacation a year, and I always hoped that we would pick a good hotel, etc., so it would be really worth all the sacrifices that it was costing. I almost never got a massage or pedicure. After justifying the expenditure, I bought a half day of household help per week during the school year. I did my own laundry, grocery shopping, landscaping, and pool service. I had, by most average American standards, a “nice” home and a livable lifestyle, but it was NOT the lifestyle of the rich and famous. That was until Network Marketing created so much wealth for us that our only recourse was to spend it.

The year was 1995. That was the year we bought our estate, filled our lake with dozens of ducks, geese, and swans. We saw so much money accumulating that we made plans for, and then built, another palatial lakeside home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, got our irreplaceable full-time cook — picture yourself sitting by the crackling fireplace in the winter while your maid fetches your morning paper, slides a steaming cup of freshly ground coffee in your hand, and takes your breakfast order.

It’s all come true for me because I had a dream. First, I created a mentor relationship with some industry experts. I subsequently developed a plan. I have learned a secret about networking that virtually insures my success on command. It’s a secret that can change your life, too.

I want to share with you what I know. If you will study these “guidelines” and follow them to the letter, you too can write your own ticket to success in MLM. I call these my 10 steps to becoming 10 feet tall and bulletproof in MLM today:

(1) Choose a company that has been in business at least two years and one that “has its act together,” as opposed to one that just has “great products.” In truth, almost all companies that survive have great products, but great products don’t sell themselves. Great promotions are what sell, PERIOD!!

(2) Choose a sponsor like a marriage partner. This is your most important link to the MLM brass ring. Sponsor yourself under the “wrong” person and your upline could erode your business and fail to give much needed constructive coaching, which enables you to make vital on-course corrections. No great athlete functions without a coach and few great MLMers do either;

(3) Become a multi-task specialist. Most women already are, so you likely already possess the supreme qualifications here. A multi-task specialist is someone who handles several tasks simultaneously and does a great job on all. As a working woman, a mother, a cook, a chauffeur, a phone operator, and an emergency room technician, you have probably already earned your stripes here. Most women have . . . and most men have not. This talent alone makes you a definite MLM superstar candidate;

(4) Spend a minimum of 20 minutes per day in “guided” personal development work. By that I mean, personal development books, tapes, exercises or seminars that are recommended by your mentor to help you overcome any self-sabotaging tendencies you may have and to keep you positively oriented;

(5) Develop new habits. You need to set-up a 21 day system which will lock in your financial production;

(6) Create your “name list” of at least 200 people you have met from all walks of life or fewer if you don’t want to earn as much. Ask your mentor for some help if you get stuck here;

(7) Recognize the major differences between how men approach MLM vs. how women approach it. You will almost never be successful giving them the same business opportunity presentation;

(8) Be coachable when you see your plan for financial freedom developing, and be coachable when things don’t work. I believe that anyone can be led into seeing that “brass ring” and “rainbow’s end” in the industry, anyone that is, who will listen to, and follow, a simple 1-2-3 step process;

(9) Realize that your family, friends, co-workers, and environment will surely try to sabotage you the minute you begin to be successful in creating your home-based empire. A careful coaching program can prevent you from self-destructing when a spouse, parent, or other person thinks you are crazy . . . or worse yet, runs you down for believing in yourself;

(10) Since you can start nearly any home-based business for just a few hundred dollars in supplies, training and products, there is no reason for you to do more industry study before getting started. The worst thing that can happen, if you join in a company today and it ultimately doesn’t make it, is that you would learn a lot and earn nothing or very little. When you think about it, that’s better odds than enrolling in college where you will learn who knows what to prepare you for something that may not exist by the time you have completed your degree and will cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands, whether it can lead to a career or not. If you don’t believe me here, ask your doctor (who’s probably working twice as hard for half the money he earned 5 years ago, the victim of managed health care). His career in medicine is certainly not what it used to be before all the HMO’s took over the health industry.

I personally have spent tens of thousands on college and have degrees in English, Home Economics, and Sociology, with a Masters in Counseling and education. It pains me to report that my highest income in my chosen profession was less than $40,000.00 a year after 18 years of practice and all the merit advancements.

I now make more than twice that amount each month. I did not know such earning potential really existed for me, and I certainly didn’t know that all that advanced education — would be a hindrance to my MLM success, because I would try too hard to “figure everything out” my first few years and never make any money (although I collected a lot of information and tips from other distributors). I call that “the blind leading the blind.”

Be smarter than I was. Recognize that you, as a woman, (an estimated 70% of networkers are women), will be starting on level playing field with every other beginner, every other expert and talented person . . . and, armed with these insights, you will have the greatest inside knowledge of how to make it work. Therefore, you will be a guaranteed superstar if you don’t give up too soon or deviate from these guidelines.

There is nothing — NOTHING — you cannot achieve if you team up with people who have a proven track record and commit to being undaunted by failure.

This little school teacher from Escalon, California has learned that about the only way you could “mess up” with this plan is to make it harder than it is supposed to be by complicating it with the addition of more steps. You deserve to create that life you love. You deserve to be pampered and to spend quality time with your family. You deserve to set your own schedule. You have never seen a better time to enter network marketing than right now — TODAY. You can have it all just like I do! Let network marketing open up these possibilities for you, and I promise you will never be the same again!

More Women ‘taking Financial Control’

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

The roles men and women take, in terms of control over household finances, are changing, a new study indicates.

According to research carried out by Egg, the proportion of males who make less money than their partners has doubled over the past five years. In 2002 about a tenth of men had a lower income than their loved ones, however this now stands at one in five. More than half (53 per cent) of females surveyed state they are happy to be the main earner in their home. Meanwhile, a fifth report that having a higher salary than their partner allows them to have a bigger say on what money is spent on. Consequently, women may be taking greater control of the household finances, whether relating to paying mortgages and utility bills or applying for a loan.

Meanwhile, men were indicated to be leading an increasingly laid-back lifestyle. Just under a third of males regularly meet up with their friends for lunch, while ten per cent often visit the gym. Meanwhile, some 43 per cent go clothes shopping at least once per week. Overall, 15 per cent of those surveyed state that they are not prepared to give up a life of luxury to rejoin the rat race.

However, findings by the Citi Group-owned online bank showed that some women are taking a negative view of the laid-back lifestyle that their male partners lead. Just over a fifth (21 per cent) of females reported that they would prefer it if their significant other was the top earner, while 27 per cent resent their position as being the household’s main breadwinner. The study also indicated that a further 25 per cent believe that their financial role, whether this relates to paying back credit cards, creating a budget or managing loan repayments, is “highly stressful”. Meanwhile, 14 per cent of women surveyed assert they would like to pursue a “life of leisure” similar to the one their male partners enjoy.

Commenting on the figures, Alison Wright, chief marketing officer for Egg, said: “It is encouraging seeing how many women are now financially savvy and taking control of the household’s finances. There really has been a change over the last five years with some of the old stereotypes of who earns the money and who pays the bills being broken down. Whereas men have now fully appreciated that their female counterparts are capable of being the main breadwinners and as a result they seem to be embracing a life of leisure – much to the annoyance of most partners.”

Those who find that they are beginning to struggle with their finances, whether they are the top earner in the household or not, may wish to apply for a personal loan to help get to grips with money management and meet essential demands on their spending. In research released earlier this year by Axa, 82 per cent of Britons who have helped a loved one out with their finances, whether this is due to difficulties in paying off loans, plastic cards or otherwise, have in turn suffered from a negative experience. Consequently, taking out a cheap personal loan may well be an advisable way for many people to get out of financial difficulties.

The Truth About Ripped Abs for Women

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

One of the most overlooked and important aspects about getting ripped abs for women is having the proper motivation. To many times women focus on the wrong things, worrying to much about which workout to use and which diet to follow. By maintaining focus on your goals and the reasons why you want a set of firm abs you will better see that goal met.

For those women aren’t willing to make the proper sacrifices and make the necessary changes in their lifestyles getting that flat trim stomach may be nothing more then a dream. The reason for this is simple; much like anything in life if you wish to succeed you need to give forth the proper effort.

If you are a woman looking to get ripped abs what is your motivation. Is it a trim sexy body? Are you trying to improve your overall health? Only you can answer that question but whatever your reasons you need to use these to keep motivated to reach your goal. If you understand what a set of strong abs will do for you and you know why you want them it is much easier to stick with your healthy diet and exercise routine.

Ultimately this is what will tax your motivation the most because eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly is the only way to get a set of ripped abs for both women and men. It is so easy to just say the heck with it and go back to your old ways because it does take work to meet this goal.

There is no shortcut to a tight stomach regardless of the claims made by all those infomercials you see on TV. Do not get fooled by the hype that the latest fat burning pill or ab lounge rocker machine promise. The motivation to change the way you look and feel about yourself comes from within, not from the promise of some huckster on TV.

The point is that ripped abs for women requires you to change not only your way of thinking but many of those habits that are detrimental to your goal. If you stay focused on what you want and concentrate on those things that will get you there, namely hard work and healthy lifestyle choices you will soon have the set of abs you’ve always wanted.
